Nicknamed ‘Dhing Express’, Hima Das is a 19-year-old Indian sprinter from the state of Assam. She became the first Indian woman — indeed the first ever Indian athlete — to win a gold medal in any format of a global track event at IAAF World U20 Championships when she clocked a speed of 51.46 seconds. Born on January 9, 2000, to rice farmers in Dhing village of Assam’s Nagaon district, Das won five back-to-back gold medals in about a month in Czech Republic in July 2019.Born on 9th January 2000, Hima Das is an Indian sprinter who has scripted history with her super-sonic performance at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships. She is the first Indian woman to clinch a bar of gold at the event. This young Assam girl has proved the world that it is your perseverance that leads you towards glory. Initially, Das used to play football but was suggested by her school teacher to switch to an individual sport which led her to go for the sprint. Her dream is to make the nation proud, which she is undoubtedly living.Das passed her 12th examination from Assam Higher Secondary Education Council in May 2019. Hima Das, the first Indian women athelete to win gold medal at International Level, National record holder and the golden girl of India who stunned the whole world by grabbing five international gold medals within three weeks.In 2000, the golden girl was born in Dhing village in Assam to a poor farmer family.Hima was an active child, she used to play football with boys in muddy fields. Earlier she was interested in football but her physical education teacher in Navodaya Vidyalaya saw her speed while playing football and advised her to take up sprinting.On 2nd July 2019, the Dhing Express clocked 23.65 seconds on her way to 200m gold in Poznan Athletics Grand Pix in Poland.On 7th July, she again won gold at Kutno Athletics meet in Poland by finishing her race in 23.97 seconds.She holds the current Indian national record in 400 metres with a timing of 50.79 s that she clocked at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. She is the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships. Appointed as Deputy Superintendent in Assam Police on 26 February 2021. Prior to getting into the track & field event, Hima was interested in Football. She used to play football with boys at her school and even wanted to pursue her career in Football.




Later, Hima opted sprint as her career; upon advice from a school physical education teacher named Shamsul Hoque. Nippon (Hima’s Coach) spotted her during an inter-district meet. He says- She was wearing cheap spikes, but she won gold in the 100 and 200. She ran like the wind. I hadn’t seen such a talent in ages.”

Hima was born and raised in a small village in Assam. She was born in a poor family but was good in sports and started football along with boys. She soon realized that women’s football is not going to earn her any recognition. She then with the help of her PE teacher named Shamsul Hoque started training in sprinting.She earned a niche for herself at the junior level and finally competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She couldn’t bring back medals but showed that she has the potential to win medals for her country. The very same year, she created history after she won the gold medal at World U-20 Championships 2018 in 400m. She thereby became the first Indian sprinter to win a gold medal at an international event. She represented India at the 2018 Asian Games in 4*400m Women’s Team, Mixed Team. She along with her team won the Gold medal in both the events. She also won Silver medal at the 400m sprint and thereby also created the national record by clocking 50.79s.

After a great 2018 season the expectation were high from her and she didn’t disappoint as she won as many as 5 Gold medals at the international level. She was congratulated by celebrities from various fields for her achievement and now all eyes will be on her to win an Olympic medal at the 2020 Olympics, Tokyo. She too has vowed to win more and more medals for her country. It is safe to say that she is arguably the best women athlete that India has ever produced.

Das competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the 400 metres and the 4×400 metres relay. In the 400 mtres, Das qualified for the final where she finished sixth in a time of 51.32 seconds, 1.17 seconds behind gold medalist Amantle Montsho from Botswana. In the 4×400 metres relay she was part of the Indian team that competed in the final. Hima Das Early Life

Hima Das was born in Kandhulimari village in Dhing, Assam to Ronjit and Jonali Das; she is the youngest of four children. She attended the Dhing Public School and began playing football as a child. Das caught the attention of Nipon Das, an athletics coach from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare during an inter-district competition. He asked her to shift to the state’s capital Guwahati for training. Hima Das‘ parents agreed to the proposal despite their reservations. Describing her as a rare talent Nipon Das said that Hima Das’ “dedication and hard work set her apart”. She then moved accommodation near the Sarusajai Sports Complex and got enrolled to the state academy, which specialised in boxing and football. Later, a separate wing was started for athletics.She played the sport with the boys at her school and wanted to pursue a career in football. Later, on the suggestion of Shamsul Hoque, a Physical Education Trainer from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Das switched over to athletics and began participating in short and middle distance races. Hoque introduced her to Gowri Shankar Roy of the Nagaon Sports Association. Das later qualified for inter-district competition and won two Gold medals at the sports meet.

On 20th July 2019, Hima added her fifth gold medal of the month with her super-sonic performance in the 400 m race in Nove Mesto where she recorded the timing of 52.09 s she succeeded in her chase for another gold medal at the Tabor Athletics Meet where she clocked 23.25 s Bagged a gold medal at the Asian Games test event, held in Jakarta in 2018, improving her personal best timing to 23.59 s Won a bronze and a silver medal at the school nationals in 100m and 200m, respectively that ultimately lead her to compete at the Youth (U-18) Nationals of 2017 in Hyderabad. There, she clocked 25.85s. Appointed as the first-ever UNICEF Youth Ambassador for India on 18th November 2018 Hima qualified for the 2017 Asian Youth Championships through her performance at the Youth U-18 Nationals and finished seventh with an improved timing of 24.52 s. Won the 200m sprint event at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix 2019 with the timing of 23.65s on 2nd July and replicated the victory at the Kutno Athletics Meet in the same event with the timing of 23.97s on 7th Jul Bagged her third medal of the season with her perfect timing of 23.43 s at the Kladno Athletics Meet 2019. The same month, Finished fifth at the 2017 World Youth Championships, held in\ Nairobi with the timing of 24.31s Bagged gold medals at the Asian Games of 2018 in women’s 4×400 m and mixed 4×400 m events, and\ earned the second spot in 400 m event. The same year in September, Hima signed an endorsement deal with Addidas and the Government of India also bestowed her with the Arjuna award.
