Ranjitsinh Disale from India has just been announced as the winner of the Global Teacher Prize 2020.Ranjitsinh Disale, a government school teacher from Paritewadi, Maharashtra, had made history. This is not because he won the 1 million USD Global Teacher Prize 2020 which brings incredible honour and glory in itself, but because in a never-before-seen instance, he decided to share half of his Rs 7.4 crore winnings with the rest of the nine finalists for the Global Teacher Prize to support the “incredible work” of the “change makers”.
Ranjitsinh initially wanted to be an IT engineer, but after engineering college did not work out as he anticipated, his father suggesting teacher training as an alternative. Initially hesitant, Ranjitsinh’s time in teacher training college was life-changing. Ranjitsinh Disale teaches at the Zilla Parishad Primary School in Maharashtra, India. He initially wanted to be an IT engineer but, realising that teachers are the real change-makers in the world, decided to become one himself. He has made the top 50 shortlist for the Global Teacher Prize 2020 for his innovative work in turning his school around. The first school he taught in had girls from tribal communities for whom education wasn’t a priority. There Ranjitsinh faced a rebellion from the locals who disapproved of his efforts and even pelted him with stones. In order to reach out to his students, Ranjitsinh learnt the local language and created QR coded textbooks embedded with audio poems, video lectures, and stories. By introducing students to technology, he has helped them improve their communication, creativity, and real-world problem-solving skills. Ranjitsinh’s work has also gained recognition and finds a mention in the book ‘Hit Refresh’ by Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO. “In Mr. Disale’s words, he finds happiness in going above and beyond to provide the best education for his students”.

2. Ranjitsinh Disale is an Indian teacher who is teaching in a government school of Maharashtra.
3. He also noticed that the curriculum of the school was not in their language i.e. Kannada, so he decided to learn Kannada first and then translated the
curriculum from 1st standard to 4th standard.
4. He wanted to became an engineer, but somehow he could not do it. Later, his father suggested him to pursue his career as a teacher.
5. He has also worked towards eradicating teenage marraiges in his village and promoting girls’ education.
